Love Bombing vs

Back in the day before I was a happily married woman and a dating coach, like many of you out there, I fell in love bombing.

Not because I was naive. Not because I didn’t know better. Because it worked on me the way it works on many smart, self-aware, emotionally healthy singles. It felt like the chemistry I was waiting for. And it always, always happens around the three month mark, right after they put their hands on me.

The part no one tells you about love bombing. Whether people are aware of it or not. Pressure is not a sign of how much they love you.

It’s a strategy of how quickly they can hook you up, invest and match you before you have time to really evaluate if this is a good match. Once you’re hooked, the effort is wasted. The search was never about you… it was about winning.

So how do you actually tell the difference between someone who love bombs you and someone who really, truly loves you? Let’s break it down.

Love Bombing vs

Love bombing looks like this: Big moves early: surprise gifts, dramatic announcements, planning your future together before you know their middle name.
The real interest looks like this: Small, consistent actions over time: Remembering what you said last week, showing up when they say they will, checking in because they care and want to know how your day went.

Love bombing feels like this: There’s no time to think when you’ve been swept off your feet so quickly.
The real benefit looks like this: Fixed Earth. You can think clearly. You are not worried, there is no hot and cold movement. They are consistent and clear.

Love Bombing gives you: ALL the words. Great, beautiful, fast words to follow. “You’re amazing! Let’s plan a vacation together!” and when you ask about it, they say. “We’ll talk about it later, I’m too busy.”
Gives you genuine interest: Activities that combine words continued for weeks and months. Not just in the beginning, but especially after the beginning, when the novelty wears off.

Love bombing wants: To meet your friends and family quickly, to make it “official” quickly, to move quickly, anything that locks the relationship before you have time to really appreciate it.
The real interest requires: To finally meet the people who matter to you, and it’s okay to let it happen at a pace that makes sense, not at a pace that drives you crazy.

Love bombing responds with a limit: Guilt, withdrawal, or injury “I guess you don’t feel the same way I do.”
Real interest responds to a limit of: They respect their boundaries. They may feel comfortable, because a confident person likes to know where they stand.

4 Ways to Protect Yourself

I don’t want you to be a snob or a cynic…that’s not the point. The goal is to slow down enough to see clearly. Here’s what really works:

1. Pay attention to why you are being complimented.

Words are cheap and bombers love it. If someone tells you that you are “the one” with nothing but emotion to back it up, they are all “words”. If someone tells you that you are “the one” and can actually show why they feel that way, like the way you had a difficult conversation with your mother, the patience you had with a stranger, the way you kept a promise you didn’t have to.

It’s in your character, not just the rush of a new relationship. The real interest is special. It focuses on who you really are, not just how good you feel at the moment.

2. Be clear about your non-negotiables and values before you jump in.

Sit down and be specific: What do you really need in a partner? What are you willing to compromise on? Do you need someone emotionally? If so, describe it. How does it look? When you know this in advance, you come from a place of strength and face what you need to make you happy instead of being swept off your feet and giving up your limits to make someone like you.

3. Slow down. You control the speed, not them.

This was the hardest lesson for me. I used to think that if I slowed things down, I would lose people. I thought the violence was the relationship. They are not. Someone who really loves you will respect a speed that makes you feel good. Someone who likes bombing will push you back, blame you, or accuse you of being “into it.” That reaction alone tells you everything.

4. Give it 90 days before you decide it’s right.

Don’t feel what you feel because you need to hold back your feelings for three months. But before you make any big decisions, before you give your whole heart away, look at the full scope of the relationship.

Does the effort in week one match the effort in week twelve? Do they show up after a bad day the same way they do after a good one? 90 days is long enough for a pattern to reveal itself, and short enough that you don’t waste years waiting to learn.

Genuine interest does not need to convince you. It doesn’t have to be fast to be accurate. If it is true, it can live slowly. In fact, it strengthens at a slower pace, because you both form a special bond that will last every performance.
