How To Date Without Dating: My Real Life Experience Meeting My Husband

Tired of scouring dating apps, hoping to find the real deal? You’ve spent hours browsing, gone on dates, and still haven’t found the lasting connection you’ve been praying for. As a Christian, you may ask, “What is God’s plan for me?” or even wondering how to navigate such a technology-consumed world without apps.

One thing I really love about my relationship with my husband is that we met in “real life”, not on a dating app. And while I have zero judgment on dating apps (they have helped countless couples!), our relationship slowly grew through face-to-face interactions over the course of several months.

Not only do I love that part of our story, but it also allows me to confidently tell you that dating is possible without dating apps! Yes, apps are a great tool, but they’re not the only way to meet an amazing partner. There is incredible hope and opportunity in exploring other avenues.

If that thought excites you, hang on tight. We’ll talk about ways to expand your dating options, deepen your confidence during the process, and maybe discover someone in the most unexpected place.

How To Date Without Dating Apps: Questions and Answers

When it comes to meeting a Christian man, the “where” and “how” can feel overwhelming. Here are some answers to common questions about dating apps and connecting with people to help you on your journey.

How Did People Meet Before Dating Apps?

Back in the day, most marriages were arranged, but in the more recent past (before dating apps), people met in simple, organic ways. Maybe you met someone with your friends, at church, or while at work. People often rely on social gatherings, family, and shared activities to find like-minded people. The beauty of these conversations was the natural way relationships developed over time, without pressure.

Is No Application Possible Today?

Unlimited! I’m a firm believer that dating without dating apps is not only possible, but one of the best ways to meet someone. However, it takes intention and a willingness to step out of your comfort zone. These days, we’re so used to being connected to screens — whether it’s on dating apps, social media, or text — that face-to-face interactions seem almost out of hand. This does not mean that meeting someone in real life is impossible; it just means you’ll need to be open to adjusting your habits.

When it comes to how to meet without apps, start putting yourself in situations where you can actually meet people. This could be joining a church group, attending a local coffee shop, or pursuing hobbies that you are passionate about. It may be a little intimidating at first, but the relationships you build in person can be more real and meaningful. Offline dating is not only possible; it’s a chance to create something real and innovative.

Where is the Best Place to Meet Your Future Husband?

I don’t think there is a “right” or “best” place to find your future husband. God already has a plan for how your paths will unfold, so it’s more important to be sure of it than to dwell on the details. What is really important is to treat others in a fair and honest manner. It can happen anywhere – in a church group, at the gym, or at an ordinary time when you least expect it. Instead of worrying about finding the perfect place, focus on your presence and be open to the opportunities God places in your life. Sometimes the best relationships start in the most unexpected places.

How To Date Yourself Without Dating Apps

Dating apps are easier in a sense because they tell you what to do. Send beautiful pictures. Write a bio that reflects your personality. Swipe right. Swipe left. Send the message first. The cycle continues. Dating in real life does not follow such a regular process. When it comes to how to meet without apps, you have to be intentional, confident, and willing to put yourself out there. This is how it appeared to me.

We met at the gym

I met my now husband a few months after I moved to a new city, where I got a job at a gym. He joined the gym. I noticed it after I started working there. (And I would later find out that he was also interested in me and was asking my friends about me.) But it would be several months before we could talk to each other. Just me, smiling at the front desk as he came in – as I do for all my customers, knowing in my heart that I was interested in him on a different level.

I made the first move

One day, she was talking to my coworker, a guy she was friends with outside of the gym. And he talked about getting to know everyone who works there. I thought to myself, everyone… even me? I had the opportunity to join in, so I asked, “Do you know my name?” Was it. The first question and the beginning of our first conversation.

(By the way, he knew my name.

One Small Action Made All the Difference

We chatted about things to do around town as I was still finding my way around the new city. After a while, he asked for my phone number, and I happily gave it to him. He returned to finish his workout while I busied myself at the front desk until my shift was over.

When it was time to leave, I made a small but deliberate move – I saw him still on the treadmill and went to say goodbye. That simple gesture made a bigger impact than I expected. He later told me he thought it was thoughtful and sweet. Looking back, that was just the beginning of our story.

How To Meet People Without Dating Apps

So, what can you take from this story about dating without dating apps? Here are a few things:

1. Be observant

Pay attention to the people you see regularly, whether it’s at work, your favorite coffee shop, or the gym. For example, I noticed my now husband during my shift at the gym. It wasn’t anything dramatic, just something about his presence that caught my attention. Sometimes, the beginning of something meaningful is right in front of you.

2. Look for Opportunities

When you see a chance to connect, don’t hesitate to act. I heard my husband talk about knowing everyone in the hall, and I used that as the perfect opening to ask him, “Do you know my name?” That one question turned into our first conversation. You don’t have to think too much; just find natural moments to initiate dialogue.

Also, ladies, don’t be afraid to make the first move. I can tell you from personal experience, it can be worth it.

3. Be intentional

Small, thoughtful actions can make a big difference. After sharing my phone number, I tried to find him later on the treadmill to say goodbye before I left for the day. It was a simple act of kindness that I didn’t think much of (just me), but it changed everything for him. Your honesty shows others that you care, and it can leave a lasting impression.

4. Take Things One Step at a Time

Don’t feel pressured to make big moves or move too quickly. Our relationship started with a short chat about things to do in town and grew naturally from there. A small, honest conversation can lay the foundation for something deeper without overwhelming either of you.

5. Trust God’s Timing

Some of the best relationships happen when you are patient and open to what God has planned. I never expected to meet my husband while working at the gym, but being in those moments allowed our paths to cross. Rest assured that God has a unique story for you, and sometimes, the most unexpected places lead to the most beautiful relationships.

Where to Meet People Other than Dating Apps

You can’t meet new people by staying at home every day or sticking to the same routine. You need to step outside your comfort zone and go where the people are. Here are some ideas:

  • Gym: Whether you’re into weightlifting, yoga, or those killer spin classes, you already have something in common with the people sweating next to you. It’s all about starting a simple conversation during a break in their routine.
  • Cafe: If you have a favorite coffee shop that you frequent, pay attention to other travelers. If you notice someone you know, try to break the ice with something simple, like, “I see you here a lot, what’s your favorite drink?”
  • Bakal stores: Yes, even a store can be a good place to meet people! Ask a quick question in the produce section or have a casual conversation about a great meal idea or recipe.
  • Church or Faith-Based Groups: Joining a church or joining small groups is a great way to meet people who share your values. Stay after the service to introduce yourself or attend events to connect naturally.
  • Dog Park: If you have a dog, the dog park is an easy win. Compliment someone else’s dog or ask about its name and breed. Dogs feel vulnerable to breaking ice.
  • Classes and Events: Cooking classes, art workshops, or even community volunteer events are great places to meet people. When you’re doing something you love, conversations happen naturally because you already share a common interest.
  • Bookstore: Do you like reading? Look for your favorite section in the bookstore and see who’s there. If you see someone browsing a book you like, say something simple, “That’s a great one—I really enjoyed it.”
  • Markets or Outdoor Events: Farmers markets, festivals, or local hikes are perfect places to meet people in a casual way. A simple comment or question about the event can be a great conversation starter.

The key is to put yourself out there and be open to conversation. You don’t have to force anything; A little intention and a friendly approach can go a long way.
